A celebration of cultures
Our school was transformed into a vibrant hub of colour and celebration in early July, as staff and students came together to mark Culture Day.A key event in the academic calendar, the occasion was a fantastic opportunity for the school community to acknowledge the multitude of cultures and religions that are present at Sir Jonathan North Girls’ College.
Throughout the day, a collection of engaging activities – some interactive and some classroom-based – were set up, each one designed to educate students about different cultures and religious groups.
They enjoyed the opportunity to learn some British Sign Language and attended a lesson entitled ‘Constructing a Community.’ Strong emphasis was also given to the various religious festivals we acknowledged during the year, including Diwali, Eid and Vaisakhi.
To a backdrop of traditional music – which radiated from the Main Hall – students also had fun learning a range of cultural dances, including Bhangra, Garba and the Salsa.
The hands-on activities continued; showcasing their creativity, our students constructed Origami models, created their own Islamic patterns, practiced some Spanish art and even decorated tote bags.
There were board games to play, steel pans to bang and the opportunity to take part in a litter pick.
It was a magical day that united the school community and educated our students about the importance of diversity, inclusivity and respect.
We look forward to next year!
